Robert B. Burress 'Bob' Citizenship AwardThe first Robert B. Burress 'Bob' Citizenship Award was presented at the Appreciation Night for the GSSNA.
Bob was born in Cornith, Mississippi Sept. 10, 1924. He lived most of his young life on a farm with his Grandparents. At the age of 15 he got his first job at an auto garage. At age 18 he joined the U.S. Army, was assigned to the motor pool to repair jeeps and was stationed in the South Sea Island in our war against Japan.
After the war, he setteled in South Carolina, married and had two daughters. He work his way up to a senior level with General Motors retiring in 1982.
Bob moved to Jacksonville in 1959. He was a founding member of the Greater Sans Souci Neighborhood Association. He demonstrated true commitment to solving neighborhood problems. He was an ambassador of good will and kindness. He wasn't afraid to go right up to a stranger and become their friend. His method was the good old fashion talking to the parties involved to see if there could be some compromise met before it got out of hand. He cared for his neighborhood by being a neighborhood watch captain and even volunteered to be our SHADCO representative. He spent many hours in his garage sanding and painting our neighborhood signs. He was active in handing out our newsletters. He demonstrated Citizenship and was an ambassador of Sans Souci.
Bob passed away July 8, 2009 and the membership of the Greater Sans Souci Neighborhood Association wanted to find a way of honoring the work Bob had contributed to this community, thus establishing the Robert B. Burress 'Bob' Citizenship Award.
The recipient of this award should demonstrate a genuine concern for their community. Give unselfishly back to their community through their volunteer work and continue to be a shining example of what Bob had envisioned for the community in which he lived and loved.
The first recipient of this award has demonstrated this exact quality.
